NWEA MAP Assessment

At SHCS, your child will take a test called the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP Growth), which is an assessment developed by NWEA. This is a special kind of computerized diagnostic assessment that adapts to your child's level:

  • If your child answers a question correctly, the next question gets a little harder.
  • If they answer a question incorrectly, the next question gets a little easier.

This continues until the test accurately pinpoints your child's current learning level. The final score is an estimate of what your child knows and what they're ready to learn next. Because the test is designed to find that exact level, students typically get about half the questions right and half wrong—that’s a sign the test is working as intended!

The Archdiocese has three testing windows – fall, winter, and spring.

Student MAP testing results are reported in RIT scores (short for Rausch Unit). A RIT score is an estimation of a child’s instructional level and a measure of a child’s growth in school. You may have a chart in your home on which you mark your child’s height to show how much he or she has grown from one year to the next. MAP assessments are very similar, as they measure your student’s growth in various subject areas from year to year. This enables teachers to pinpoint what students have learned and what students are ready to learn.

While many assessments measure achievement, this assessment also measures academic progress and growth over time. When students answer questions to the best of their ability, MAP provides reliable insights making it simple for teachers to plan differentiated instruction, develop interventions for struggling students, and determine what students are ready to learn next.

NWEA MAP provides easy-to-use, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)-aligned reports that give teachers the information needed to determine appropriate academic content over the school year. NWEA MAP provides reliable insights that make it simple for teachers to plan for instruction and see what students are ready to learn next.
